A national electric code was adopted in 1987. The national electric code deals with the interpretation of specific devices and practices.

The City Electrical Code Committee consists of an electrical inspector acting as secretary without the right to vote on issues presented before the committee, one member who is an officer of the City Fire Department; and two local electrical contractors who regularly engage in business. One member must be a citizen with practical knowledge of electricity, one must be an electrical engineer not engaged in the electrical contracting business, and one must be an employee of the local electrical utilities company.
