Fire Hydrants

The Mansfield Fire Department, in coordination with the City of Mansfield Water Department, conducts annual fire hydrant testing and maintenance to ensure hydrants are in proper working order for fire protection. This testing helps:

  • Verify adequate water flow and pressure.
  • Identify and repair mechanical issues.
  • Ensure hydrants are free of obstructions and accessible in emergencies.

Fire hydrants may be left running after testing or use for several reasons:

  • Clearing sediment – Flushing hydrants removes built-up minerals and rust from the water lines.
  • Restoring water clarity – After a hydrant is used, running water helps prevent discoloration in nearby homes.
  • Pressure adjustments – Firefighters or water crews may need to relieve excess pressure or ensure proper system function.

Fire hydrant testing or flushing can stir up sediment, leading to temporary water discoloration. If you experience rust-colored water in your washing machine:

  • Do not wash clothes until the water runs clear to prevent staining.
  • Run cold water through your sink or bathtub for several minutes to flush your home’s plumbing.
  • If rust stains appear on clothing, do not dry them. Instead, rewash with stain-removing detergent and avoid bleach, as it can set stains.

Water discoloration should clear within a few hours. If issues persist, contact the Mansfield Water Department.
