Local and State Open Burning Regulations
Open burning is regulated by both the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and our local and state fire codes to protect public health and air quality. In Mansfield, certain types of open burning are restricted or prohibited due to safety and environmental concerns.
Prohibited Open Burning
Certain agricultural and controlled burns may require approval from the Ohio EPA and the Mansfield Fire Department before ignition.
Guidelines for a Recreational Fire
Recreational fires, such as campfires and outdoor fire pits, are allowed under specific conditions:
If a fire is producing excessive smoke or causing a nuisance, it may be required to be extinguished, even if it meets all other guidelines.
Fire Department Investigation of Burn Complaints and Penalties
The Mansfield Fire Department investigates reports of illegal burning. If a fire is found to be in violation of local or state regulations:
