Ride-Along Program

Program Overview

The Ride-Along Program allows individuals to accompany firefighters and paramedics during their shifts to gain insight into daily emergency response activities. Participants may include:

  • EMS students completing clinical time requirements
  • Community members interested in public safety
  • Healthcare professionals, educators, and public officials

All observers must follow strict patient confidentiality and safety policies while participating in the program.

Student Clinical Time

The Mansfield Fire Department partners with EMS and fire training programs to provide required clinical ride time for students. Eligible students will:

  • Gain hands-on experience in emergency medical response
  • Observe patient care and treatment in real-world scenarios
  • Learn from experienced paramedics and firefighters
  • Must be enrolled in an approved EMS or fire science program
  • A notarized waiver form must be completed prior to participation
  • Adherence to all safety and confidentiality policies is mandatory

Civilian Observers

The Civilian Observer Program allows members of the public to experience the fire and EMS profession up close. This program is open to:

  • Students exploring careers in public safety
  • Public officials and community leaders
  • Journalists or researchers studying emergency services
  • Participants must be at least 18 years old (or have special approval for younger observers)
  • A notarized waiver form must be completed prior to participation
  • Adherence to all safety and confidentiality policies is mandatory

Program Guidelines and Required Forms

All participants must review the HIPAA Orientation Brochure, sign the HIPAA non-disclosure agreement and agree to department rules before participating in the Ride-Along Program.

  1. Download and review the HIPAA Orientation Brochure (Student or Civilian)
  2. Complete and submit the HIPAA Acknowledgement and Non-Disclosure Agreement (Student or Civilian)
  3. Complete and submit the Waiver Form (must be notarized)
  4. Contact Fire Administration to schedule your ride-along
  5. Arrive at the scheduled station on time and follow all observer guidelines
