Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms are one of the most effective ways to protect your family from fire. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Fires can spread quickly, and a working smoke alarm provides the early warning needed to escape safely. The Mansfield Fire Department encourages all residents to have working smoke alarms in their homes and to test them regularly.

Smoke Alarm Installation Program

The Mansfield Fire Department, in partnership with the American Red Cross, offers a Smoke Alarm Installation Program to ensure that every home has the protection it needs. Through this program:

  • Free smoke alarms may be available for qualifying residents.
  • Our firefighters will install smoke alarms at no cost to seniors and those with mobility challenges.
  • Alarms are placed in recommended locations to provide the best coverage.

Even if your smoke alarm is working, it’s essential to replace the battery at least once a year. Through our Annual Smoke Alarm Battery Replacement Program, the Mansfield Fire Department offers assistance to residents who need help changing their smoke alarm batteries.

  • Ideal for seniors, individuals with mobility challenges, or anyone who needs assistance.
  • Available once a year at no cost to qualifying residents.
  • Firefighters will check existing smoke alarms and install new batteries as needed.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an invisible, odorless gas that can be deadly. CO alarms detect the presence of this gas and provide early warning before dangerous levels accumulate. The Mansfield Fire Department recommends:

  • Installing CO alarms near sleeping areas and on every level of your home.
  • Testing CO alarms monthly and replacing the batteries at least once a year.
  • Replacing CO alarms every 5 to 7 years, as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Never using generators, grills, or gas appliances inside the home or garage.
